Mexico City (CDMX) and nearly all states in the country have prohibited the use of plastic bags starting in 2020. According to the United Nations (UN), pollution from plastic waste is everywhere and is making its way up the food chain to our tables.
Estimates for the year 2050 suggest that there will be more plastic than fish in the oceans unless people stop using items made from this material, especially bags and bottles.
Instead of plastics, compostable materials should be used, those capable of biodegrading at least 90% within 6 months when exposed to an oxygen-rich environment or in contact with organic materials. After 3 months, the material’s mass must consist of at least 90% fragments smaller than 2 millimeters.
