A compostable bag is one that disintegrates by 90% after twelve weeks in a high carbon dioxide (CO2) environment. It must also biodegrade by 90% into particles smaller than 2 millimeters within six months, without leaving toxic residues or heavy metals, according to the European Standard EN-13432.
Certified compostable bax® bags made of Polivitalio® are the first ones that, while being four times stronger than conventional plastic with a shelf life of at least 9 years, can be composted in both industrial and home composting processes without leaving microplastics.
While bax® bag models can be composted industrially, there is currently no such process in Mexico. Therefore, it is of fundamental importance that they can also be composted at home, using household organic waste, coffee filters, and leaf litter.
How can you achieve this?
Step 1. Take the bag and cut it into smaller pieces. The smaller the pieces, the easier it will be to remove mechanical properties from the bag, making composting easier.
Step 2. Soak the bag pieces in water for 10 minutes.
Step 3. Add the soaked bag pieces to your compost.
Step 4. Done! Continue your composting process as usual, and in a few days, it will have biodegraded. Remember to follow your composter’s instructions for best results.
While it has been proven that bax® bags can biodegrade in less than 22 days in organic waste (landfills), it is essential to know that the biodegradation time depends entirely on conditions such as humidity, heat, light, and the presence of microorganisms like bacteria and fungi in the compost. That’s why it’s crucial to understand the four steps mentioned above, as well as the specific procedures required for each type of compost.
bax® bags are available in T-shirt, boutique, garbage, roll, pet waste, and laundry formats, now available on Amazon.
If it’s bax®, it NEVER contaminates.
