In the United Kingdom, 8 out of 10 people believe that paper cups are recyclable. This misconception is not much different elsewhere on the planet, as most people believe that the paper cup they use for their coffee is or will be recycled simply because it’s made of paper. They’re Not Just Made of Paper
Paper dissolves when it comes into contact with water, so it must be coated with plastic. Commonly, plastics like High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) or Polypropylene (PP) are added to it. While this makes them suitable for containing beverages, it’s the very reason that makes them problematic.
They Will Pollute for Hundreds of Years
Due to this plastic coating, they are not biodegradable. Even though the paper may degrade, the plastic will remain on the planet for at least hundreds of years, breaking down into microplastics that affect our health, our food, and animals in whatever environment they end up in: the sea or land.

They End Up in Landfills
Since there’s no way to recycle them, the majority end up in landfills, where they will remain for hundreds, if not thousands, of years.
And There, They Contribute to Global Warming
As mentioned earlier, the two types of plastics used to coat these cups release two of the most critical greenhouse gases when exposed to sunlight: ethylene and methane. So, if these cups end up in a landfill or the ocean, they become a problem that contributes to the biggest challenge facing modern humanity: climate change.
